Hi everyone, how are you?

Today I’ll introduce foods commonly eaten in Japan in the summer.

First is somen (sōmen).

Somen is a thin noodle made from flour.

The boiling time is 1-2 minutes. It’s ready right away.

You rinse the cooked noodles in water and then eat the noodles with dipping sauce called “tsuyu.”

Adding negi (green onions) to the tsuyu makes it even better.

There is also something called nagashi-somen, where somen sent flowing down a pipe of bamboo that has been split in half.

Source

You pick up the flowing somen with chopsticks and eat it.

It’s fun if you do it in a group.

Next is kakigori, or shaved ice.

You can always find kakigori for sale at summer festivals in Japan.

Commonly used syrups include strawberry and melon.

Also popular is the uji-kintoki flavor, which uses matcha (powdered green tea) and adzuki beans.

Source

Many families with children will have kakigori machines in their homes.

When I was a child, we often made it at home.

It’s fun making it yourself.

Third is watermelon.

During the summer, watermelon sometimes sells out at the supermarket.

The Japanese often do something called “suika-wari,” or watermelon splitting.

A blindfolded person must split the watermelon with a stick.

The others tell the person where the watermelon is with their voices.

Everyone eats the split watermelon together.

It’s a game that can be enjoyed by both children and adults.

Writing this article made me want to eat Uji-kintoki flavored shaved ice.

I want to eat it before summer ends!

See you!!

Thanks for listening/reading. See you next week!

Photos: 25

Hi everyone, how are you?

Today, I will introduce Obon, or the Bon Festival, in Japan.

It is said that our ancestors return from the afterlife during this period.

Obon generally runs from August 13 to August 16th.

During this period, cucumbers and eggplants are presented as offerings.

On the 13th, we prepare a “horse” made from a cucumber.

Horses are fast, so this means that we want our ancestors to return home quickly.

We light a fire to let our ancestors’ spirits know the way home.

This is called mukaebi, meaning “welcoming fire.”

On the 16th, we prepare a “cow” made from an eggplant.

Cows are slow, so this means that we want our ancestors to leave slowly.

We also light a fire when sending off the spirits of our ancestors.

This is called okuribi, or “sending fire.”

Our family also lit a mukaebi at my parents’ house.

Photos: 25

Also, during this period, there is a festival called the Bon Festival dance.

Everyone wears yukatas and dances in a circle.

This is meant to be a fun experience where families spend time with their ancestors.

Photos:

It’s too bad that the Bon Festival dances were cancelled this year, though.

I look forward to next year.

However, I am glad that I got to relax and enjoy time with my family.

See you!!

English version (Charles)

Hi everyone, how are you?

Last Sunday, we went out with my family to have a barbecue.

We went to a dry riverbed.

You can park your car there, and it doesn’t cost any money.

You can choose a place that you like.

The weather that day was very nice.

All the barbecue utensils we used are owned by my brother.

When doing outdoor activities, even the preparations are fun😊

My brothers did most of the preparations, though.

For Japanese barbecues, we grill things like meat, vegetables, and fish.

We grilled garlic and vegetables that my cousin grows.

It was delicious.

After eating, my brother and Charles made a piece of art out of rocks from the riverbed. 😊

They stacked many big rocks on top of each other.

They were both like little boys 😁

When you are in nature, it feels good to even just relax and do nothing.

Food eaten outdoors together sure does taste great.

It’s hot every day, but we’re going to have a lot of fun and enjoy summer!

See you!!

KONBU

English version (Charles)

Hi everyone, how are you?

The rainy season in Japan has ended.

The weather is starting to feel like summer😊

Today I will introduce kinds of tea often drunk in Japan.

First is mugicha, or barley tea.

It is made by roasting barley seeds.

It is a common type of tea that we drink chilled in the summertime.

In the summer, the fridge at my mother’s house always has mugicha in it.😁

This tea is not made with tea leaves, but it is called “tea” anyway.

Next is ryokucha, or green tea.

It is made with raw tea leaves.

There are many varieties, including matcha, sencha, and houjicha.

I like houjicha.

Houjicha is made by roasting tea leaves.

It has a fragrant smell.

Roasting the leaves removes the caffeine.

I really like houjicha lattes, which are made with milk 😊 I highly recommend them.

Third is konbucha, or kelp tea.

This is a powder made from dried kelp.

You add hot water before drinking it.

It is characterized by its slightly salty flavor.

KONBU

There is also plum kelp tea.

This mixes plum powder with the tea powder.

I sometimes use konbucha powder to make pickles.

It goes very well with pickles. I recommend it.

I always eat too much, though😅

What kind of tea do you like to drink?

Please let me know.

See you!

Thanks for listening / reading!

In English (Charles)

Hi everyone, how are you?

Today, I will talk about a 100-yen shop that we often go to.

Almost all of the products at a 100-yen shop cost 100 yen.

Because they’re cheap and useful, these shops are popular.

Today, I’ll introduce some interesting items we found recently at a 100-yen shop.

First is Doraemon furikake.

Furikake is a food where fish, meat, seaweed, or other ingredients are made into a powder.

You sprinkle it on rice to eat it.

It had 4 flavors inside, including wakame (a kind of seaweed) and salmon.

Furikake is often used in bento boxes.

You can enjoy your rice in many different flavors.

The second item is Anpanman ochazuke. Anpanman is a popular character from a childrens’ anime.

Ochazuke originated as a dish where you poured hot tea on cold rice.

Then, people started adding ingredients like umeboshi (dried plums), nori (seaweed), and so on.

Today, we sometimes pour hot water instead of tea.

You sprinkle the ochazuke powder on your rice and then pour in hot water.

You can eat it right away.

The third item is chair socks.

You put them on the legs of chairs.

This is done to prevent damage to the floor.

The socks have cute animal illustrations drawn on them.

Charles chose these.

There sure are some interesting things out there.

The final item is this cactus.

I bought this because I wanted it😊

It’s a small cactus about the size of a ping pong ball.

It’s cute, so looking at it calms me.

Recently, I bought a decorative plant at a 300-yen shop.

The 100-yen shop had the same plant.

That came as a bit of a shock😅

If I find other interesting things, I’ll introduce them to you.

See you!!

Thanks for listening! See you next week :)
